Federica Bocco first joined The Tempest in 2018 and saw it through a period of strength and innovation as the company tracks towards profitability. She started out as an Editorial Fellow and then became an editor right after. She moved up the ranks and was promoted to Managing Editor earlier this year. Now as Editor-in-Chief, she will spearhead innovative content initiatives to help The Tempest build the future operating model for digital media and community, such as piloting data-driven editorial initiatives to boost loyalty and engagement among The Tempest’s incredible audience.

Prior to The Tempest, Bocco worked within the framework of intercultural community building and development through her role at John Cabot University, a prestigious American university in Italy. She also brings extensive expertise in the digital media and entertainment industry from her previous work analyzing global community impacts within the framework of consumer behaviorism.

“I’m so excited to welcome Federica as our Editor-in-Chief, because I know how deeply committed she is to ensuring that The Tempest remains the best place on the internet for free, authentic, high quality content, and reaches even greater heights,” said The Tempest Founder and CEO Laila Alawa. “I’m also confident, even during these tough times, that The Tempest Editorial will be in the best possible hands under Bocco’s leadership.”

“It’s certainly been a hell of a year for us all, hasn’t it? We’ve all had to dig deeper, think more creatively and reinvent ourselves outside of the box in these unprecedentedly challenging times,” said Bocco. “I am honored and delighted to announce that I’ll be serving as Editor-in-Chief at The Tempest. Working with a global team with staffers in every single continent is a utopia for most industry peers. To be able to connect, form relationships with, and learn from women of all backgrounds, abolishing all walls of time and space, has always been a dream of mine, and it’s what we’re doing at The Tempest.”

“Through The Tempest, I’ve been lucky enough to work closely with hundreds of young women through our globally-recognized fellowship program. Understanding them, mentoring and watching them grow has been the most rewarding experience of my life,” Bocco noted.

“Unbreakable bonds have been formed in our newsroom, and I would like to thank especially our incredible editors for the invaluable work they do every day. They are the real superheroes working behind the scenes and making sure we publish quality, authentic, cutting-edge content every single day.

“In 2021, I look forward to spearheading our Editorial team to continue informing, inspiring and empowering millions. Our readers look to us in times of uncertainty, and it’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly. I want us to be better and bigger and reach an even wider audience. I want us to continue shedding light on stories that need to be told, shattering all taboos. I want us to continue supporting and giving visibility to women who for too long have been overshadowed.

“At the closing of a rollercoaster year, I start this new journey with the same wide-eyed excitement I had on my first day at The Tempest. I believe our mission is more important than ever: storytelling is crucial in these dire times. And, as I always say, words have the power to change the world.”

Bocco spends her free time writing and volunteering with several community empowerment organizations in Italy. She received her B.A. from John Cabot University and lives in Rome, Italy.
